  • Jim and Joan: July 31, 2011

  • [Full Post]
  • This set was shot July 31, 2011. The date had been predetermined as the family lives at distance and is rarely all in the same city at the same time.

Unfortunately, the weather did not favor outdoor shots. We had intended to shoot at a place on Lake Ontario allowing me to make use of the sky and water as a backdrop, but with the dense storm system above the city that day, everything was grey.

We decided to try and make do with an indoor shoot at the family’s home, but when it came time to shoot, we got a slight reprieve from …

  • Animal Photography

  • [Full Post]
  • I enjoy photographing animals. Unlike people, animals seldom change their behavior in the presence of a camera. The trick of course, is to happen upon the animal so that they do not change their behavior in the presence of a photographer. Zoo’s are wonderful for this. Captive animals tend to be so at ease with the coming and going of human visitors that they seldom pay attention to us. This makes the zoo one of my favorite places to visit and photograph exotic and even some common wildlife.

Fortunate to live near the Metro Toronto Zoo, I try to visit at least once or …

  • Princess Harlow Arrives

  • [Full Post]
  • Harlow Joette Jean Leger, born December 2nd, 2010 @ 6:11am

This photo was taken March 6, 2011 when Harlow was 3 months old. The shoot was done indoors in a large bedroom with incandescent lighting from the ceiling. The light fixture was a glass and metal chandelier type with several low-wattage chandelier bulbs. The glass diffused the light considerably and prevented any shadow, and it provided a warm color cast but it was not sufficient lighting. The room had a large north facing window but the shoot occurred around noon so the sun was high and little of it penetrated into the room.

    Additionally, …

  • Now that 2012 is here, it is a good time to revisit all your online services and strengthen your passwords to protect your privacy!

We all uses services like Facebook, Hotmail, Gmail, Yahoo and countless others. An alarming number of us also use the same password every time, and I cannot stress enough how greatly that puts your personal and private information at risk!

Consider the information you provide to Hotmail or Facebook or any of the previously mentioned services when your register for your account… Your full real name, your birth date, home address, telephone numbers, multiple e-mail addresses and more. Some, in …

  • Android – iPhone – BlackBerry – Windows

  • There are now 4 major contenders in the battle for smart phone OS dominance, and 2 stragglers.

Now, regardless which camp you’re in, as a smartphone owner, you are probably pretty loyal. Just about everyone I speak with is completely convinced that their phone/OS is the best. Well, that’s actually not quite fair. I can’t find anyone who actually owns a Windows Phone to ask them, and Palm and Symbian have all but retreated.

Now, I attend UOIT. Not a huge school, but with an enrollment of about 8000 18-23 year olds minus a few mature students such as myself, it’s about as saturated …

  • Protecting Email Addresses in HTML

  • [Full Post]
  • Spamming is big business. Sophisticated robots scour the web looking for raw email addresses in HTML files and seemingly overnight, managing your inbox can become a full-time job of its own.

    Cloaking An Email Address

I went looking for a way to protect email addresses on all of my sites, without losing the functionality of the mailto: link and I came across an easy and helpful javascript solution which, with a little tweaking and customization, I was able to bend to my will.

The solution is to input an email address into HTML in a way such that farming bots won’t recognize it as …

  • What’s Behind Logo Design?

  • [Full Post]
  • How Important Is A Logo?

Let’s face it… we all make decisions based on our first impressions. In today’s dense business environments, it is crucial for your company to leave a positive and impactful impression on your potential customers. The image you put forward is what will stay with them long after any brochure or advertisement has left them. The single most distinguishable component of a company’s image is its logo!

Much thought and care must go into the creation of a logo that truly represents your company and sends the right message every time. This is where the more than 25 years of …

ABOUT MICHAEL BOURQUE

I consider myself to be a WebDesigner and a Photographer as well as a Student of both University and of Life. My interest in designing places for people to visit from their computer desktops began when I was 14 and started producing Bulletin Board Systems ( BBS ) as a hobby. As the internet emerged for the masses, I quickly set my self to learn how to produce primitive websites which has now evolved in to  cutting edge Web Applications. Still, many years later, I find I am learning as much about web design every day as I did when the internet was barely spoken of. Technology and the methods through which it is deployed is ever changing, and I along with it.

My passion for photography was discovered somewhat by accident. I ventured into a pawn shop one day and found a neglected SLR camera buried at the bottom of a display case. In typical form, I seized the opportunity to try something new and a new passion emerged. It was film in those days, and I went through a lot of it. I studied the art at Durham College, and I continually look through works by some of the greatest photographers. I find inspiration and humility in their presence. I like to produce images of people, but I dislike ‘posed’ shots. I have a great affinity for candid shots… capturing people when they are being truly themselves and this can be difficult as you can’t really just start taking photographs of strangers.

I also play guitar from time to time, enjoy watching movies, and spend far too much time playing video games. I enjoy being creative in many outlets, but I’ve found that WebDesign and Photography are my two passions. When the two combine such as they did for this site is when I am happiest. I am currently attending University of Ontario, Institute of Technology (UOIT) to study Engineering, the journey I regret not starting long ago. I am always accepting new and interesting WebDesign projects no matter how large or small, and I look forward to doing a lot more portraiture this year.

If you can put me to use somewhere, or you just want to say hello, feel free to leave a comment below. I look forward to hearing from you.
